Go Wild for Life

Zahid Hasan:
Today, 5th June, is the World Environment Day. The day is being celebrated in our country as elsewhere around the world performing various activities with a view to raising awareness among the people about the importance of protecting nature and planet Earth.

The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 on the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. After first celebration in 1973, WED has now become a widely recognized day celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world. WED is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

The day is celebrated every year on 5th June throughout the world with different themes to raise global awareness to take positive environmental initiatives to protect nature and natural resources. It is run by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

This year the theme for World Environment Day is ‘Go Wild for Life’. The theme carries the message of fight against the illegal trade in wildlife which not only contribute the erosion of biodiversity, but also threatens the survival of wild animals- tigers, elephants, rhinos and many other species. Illegal hunting of wild animals, destruction of forests, unplanned urbanization and pollution from the industries have made the environment of Bangladesh terrible. Environmentalists opine that lack of appropriate knowledge about the roles of natural resources on our existence is the key reason for their destruction.

So, there is no alternate but raising mass awareness about saving nature and natural resources. Let’s say together- Go Wild for Life.
