Oritra59’s Saree Punjabi Festival held at Dean’s Khamarbari
Md. Ashikuzzaman, BAU:
‘One who loves life serves God’ – this is the most quoted quote of Swami Vivekananda. The creator did not give animals a language. Veterinarians treat those animals. So it can be said that being a veterinarian is a noble profession. Veterinarians not only save lives by treating sick animals but also play a major role in meeting the shortage of Protein for the country’s growing population. And Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) veterinarians are playing a leading role in this.
In 1973, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman came to BAU’s 1231-acre green square and gave first-class status to BAU graduates. As a result, the desire of the students of this country to become agriculturists has become stronger.
The quality of education at BAU has improved daily, becoming one of the top agricultural education institutes in South Asia. In continuation of this, students from different countries of the world come to study at BAU every year. BAU’s Veterinary Faculty tops the list of foreign students’ choice.
The day, when BAU graduates were conferred with the first class rank, saw the gathering and jubilation of past and present students of the campus. To commemorate this day, the fourth-year students of the current Veterinary Faculty (Oritra 59) organized a Saree-Punjabi Day festival. Among them were five Nepali students and five Malaysian students.
The Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Prof. Dr. Abdul Awal, welcomed the initiative of those students. A day-long festival was arranged at the Dean’s Khamarbari in Sutiakhali, Mymensingh.
About 101 students wearing traditional Bengali dress saree and Punjabi entered the khamarbari with the music of the band party. ‘Bengaliana foods’ were served for all. In the afternoon, the photo session of all the students along with the teachers started. Sports were also organized. In the evening, after cutting cake, a cultural program started. Foreign students perform their native music and culture.

Al Faruk, a fourth-year student and class representative, said “the campus was full to the brim on the day due to various events. Due to the initiative of prof. Awal we were able to do the program very nicely. We are really happy and proud to have a student friendly teacher like sir.”
Moreover, the presence of Prof. Dr. Md. Shahiduzzaman and Prof. Dr. M. Ariful Islam in that event made us more excited. The whole program will remain in our memory forever, Faruk added.
Dipesh Ariyal, a Nepalese student, said, “We have come to Bangladesh far away from home only to study. But such arrangements have a positive effect on our studies as well. Both student-friendly teachers and arrangements are needed to develop student-teacher relationships.”

Another foreign student Jenish Adhikari expressed his feelings and said that I wore Punjabi for the first time that day in my life. Because in our country generally boys don’t wear Punjabi. Girls are also not used to wearing sarees. Today’s event of Saree Punjabi Day will be memorable for me.
Prof. Dr. Abdul Awal said, “my sons live in Australia. I rejoice in my student’s happiness, I find their reflection in them. I want to stand beside the students in any need as well as share joy and pain.”
